6 Scents that Reduce Stress & Anxiety

Of all the benefits that scented candles offer, self-care in the form of relaxation is perhaps one of the most sought after. Lighting a candle is usually the first step in creating an atmosphere of calm and relaxation.  It makes sense then that the right fragrance can make all the difference in transforming your space into one of peaceful tranquility, right? So, let’s look at some of the more relaxing scent notes (as proven by science!) that can help you de-stress and unwind.

1. Lavender

We know … this one isn’t a shocker. Lavender is a well-known fragrance that has been used for centuries to promote relaxation and calmness. It has a soothing aroma that helps reduce stress and anxiety levels. The scent of lavender in candles can help you relax and sleep better, making it a perfect choice for those who have trouble falling asleep. Just make sure you snuff the candle before getting those zzzzs!

2. Chamomile

Chamomile is another popular scent known for its calming properties. In college, I was introduced to the wonders of chamomile tea during exam crunch time and it made a world of difference in my stress levels.  Chamomile has a gentle, sweetly herbal fragrance that can help ease stress and anxiety levels. If you’re someone who loves more herbal, earthy notes and is looking for a relaxing vibe, look for chamomile notes in your candles.

3. Vanilla

Vanilla is so evocative of the comfortable, warm scents of home that it’s among the top performers when it comes to scents that can reduce stress levels.  It has a natural calming effect on the mind and body while also helping to increase feelings of happiness.  Check out our Spiced Buns candle if you love nostalgic, homey scents with a touch of vanilla.

4. Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is real multi-tasker.  Simultaneously relaxing and energizing, it’s great for clearing your mind and reducing feelings of tension.  Its bright, slightly minty aroma just begs you to breathe it in.  In fact, eucalyptus promotes deep breathing which itself is a proven stress reliever.  One of the top-of-mind scents people associate with high end spas, eucalyptus candles are perfect for re-creating that atmosphere at home. When we created our Seagrape candle, we intentionally incorporated natural eucalyptus oils into our blend precisely for those anxiety-reducing properties.  It’s a perfect blend of eucalyptus, bamboo, mint, and cedarwood that’ll make it easy to bring that soothing upscale freshness into your space.  If you’re a fan of green, fresh scents, eucalyptus is definitely a winner.

5. Sandalwood

Sandalwood is a warm and exotic scent that has been used in traditional Indian medicine for centuries. It has a rich, slightly woody, and earthy aroma that can help reduce stress and anxiety levels.  Known for its grounding properties, sandalwood candles are a great choice for those who want to create a calming atmosphere and enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy. It’s the perfect scent for those who prefer woody, spicier scents.  Check out Knight Beat here and its smooth, creamy sandalwood base note.

6. Bergamot and other citrus scents

Bergamot is a citrusy scent that is known for its ability to promote relaxation and reduce stress. It has a fresh and uplifting fragrance that’s ever so slightly spicy and can help ease anxiety while promoting feelings of happiness. And what’s more relaxing than being happy? Marketing surveys have shown time and time again that a majority of people associate citrus based scents with cleanliness, freshness, and joy.  Maybe it’s because of the association between citrus and summer! Bergamot is a huge favorite for people who love the juicy freshness of citrus and similar scents associated with warm weather.  Be on the lookout for our upcoming Sunchild fragrance which weaves the notes of sun warmed skin, fresh bergamot and lemon among soft smoky tendrils of temple incense, patchouli, and amber accords for a deeply sensual and mood-enhancing experience!
